Brasilia: Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Argentina vs Paraguay Copa America match from Estádio Nacional de Brasília. Argentina are high on confidence after beating arch-rivals Uruguay in the last match but they have still been dependant on Lionel Messi. Apart from the Barcelona star other Argentine forwards have failed to create any impact.
Paraguay, meanwhile, is coming off a 3-1 comeback win over Bolivia in its only match of the tournament so far. Paraguay fell behind early, but a red card to Bolivia forward Jaume Cuéllar opened the floodgates for Los Guaraníes as Paraguay scored all three goals after the hour-mark with the man advantage.
An Argentina win on Monday would qualify La Albiceleste for the Copa América quarterfinals with only the bottom team from each group being eliminated.
La Albiceleste and Chile played out a 1-1 draw in Rio de Janeiro where Lionel Messi’s first half lead through a wonderful free-kick was cancelled by Eduardo Vargas after the break. In the second game, Argentina picked full points as they downed uruguay 1-0 with Messi providing the assist for a Guido Rodriguez header.
Paraguay are coming into the game on the back of a 3-1 win over Bolivia. They were trailing at half-time after Bolivia took an early lead however, three second half goals sealed full points for Eduardo Berizzo’s team.
Emiliano Martinez kept his first clean-sheet for Argentina in his fourth appearance, a 1-0 win over Uruguay. It will be interesting to see if Luis Scaloni decides to persist with Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez or opts for an experienced striker like Sergio Aguero.
Meanwhile, Paraguay are yet to defeat Argentina in Copa America after having failed to do so in their last 22 meetings in the competition.
The Albiceleste need just one more victory to confirm their qualification to the quarter-finals whereas the Albirroja are looking to capitalise on a positive start to the competition after they beat Bolivia in their opening encounter.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni isn’t dealing with any injury concerns or any dilemmas regarding his starting line-up as his team remains unbeaten.
Scaloni is certainly going to start the national team’s captain and Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, who is likely to lead the attack next to Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez.
Manchester City record goalscorer, and Barca signing, Sergio Aguero looks most likely to start on the bench once more.
Paraguay manager Eduardo Berizzo also has a fully fit squad at his disposal for this crucial encounter against one of the tournament’s favourites.
Angel Romero and Alejandro Romero are most likely to lead the Paraguayans’ attack and Berizzo is most likely to maintain the same back four.
Alberto Espinola, Gustavo Gomez, Junior Alonso and Santiago Arzamendia put together a solid performance against Bolivia last week and could be trusted with facing Messi and co tonight
