Woman dies after being struck by NJ Transit bus in North Jersey, officials say. A woman died Thursday evening after she was struck by an NJ Transit bus in Haledon, officials said. The bus was making a left turn from Belmont Avenue onto Haledon Avenue around 4:30 p.m. when the woman, who was not identified, was struck by its front bumper, NJ Transit Spokeswoman Lisa Torbic told NJ Advance Media.

The woman was knocked down to the ground and was conscious when she was taken to a nearby hospital, Torbic said. She later died at the hospital, she said.

The incident was under investigation by the Haledon Police, Torbic said. 28 new police officers make history as inaugural graduates of Hudson County Public Safety Training Center (PHOTOS)

Led by Class Platoon Leader Cadet Kristina Rivera and Outstanding Trainee Award winner Anthony Camejo, the inaugural class of new police officers graduated from the Hudson County Public Training Safety Center Thursday.

Rivera, of the county Sheriff’s Office, and Camejo, of the Harrison Police Department, and 26 others took their Oath of Honor at the Arthur Coach Performing Arts Center at Secaucus High School. The oath was administered by Prosecutor Esther Suarez, while Sheriff Frank Schillari and Board of Commissioners Chairman Anthony Vainieri addressed the class. The Rev. Tawana Moody, who is also the Jersey City police director, provided the invocation and benediction.

The first class is made up of 10 new officers for Jersey City, seven for Bayonne, two for Harrison and nine for the Sheriff’s Office.

Prior to the creation of the county public training center — located at the site of the former juvenile detention center on County Avenue in Secaucus — these cadets would have had to go to sites outside of the county for their training to become public safety officers.

“We are proud to offer training now to our future public safety officers, and in time hopefully cadets from outside our county,” said County Executive Tom DeGise. “This first class represents the culmination of our long-held goal to bring this kind of training here to our county to make the public safety training process more efficient, cost effective, and in keeping with our values as a community,”
